But here’s the thing: the outrageous costs are just the tip of the iceberg, as there are many more issues that need to be addressed.

    The Pandemic and Skyrocketing Ticket Prices

    The pandemic may have ended, but it’s still haunting the entertainment industry, and not in a good way. As concerts made their big return, ticket prices began to climb to levels we’ve never seen before, leaving fans frustrated and financially drained. What was once an experience of joy and connection has turned into a nightmare of outrageous costs.

    Take the infamous Blackpink Born Pink tour in Malaysia, where a fan paid for two tickets only to discover that one of the seats didn’t even exist. The organizer offered no refund, leaving them to stand through the entire concert. In Singapore, fans who splurged on VIP tickets for the same tour found themselves unable to see the stage, spending the night watching their idols through the phones of the people in front of them. HYBE defended this choice by claiming it’s meant to ensure a fairer distribution of money and tickets, however, in reality, it only created a bigger headache for fans.

    HYBE was the first to use this system with BTS member SUGA’s US tour, and it was a complete disaster. Fans watched in horror as ticket prices skyrocketed to nearly $1,000, more than double their starting price of $350. And let’s not even get started on the costs of the service fees. The backlash was huge, and fans flooded social media with criticism. Fans pointed out that SUGA didn’t need dynamic pricing to sell out his shows, as he was perfectly capable of doing it on his own. They argued fans went into debt for no reason, as this system didn’t make anything better for anyone except for the money-hungry companies organizing these events.

    Since this system was introduced, more and more critics have been calling it out for what it is: a cash grab that preys on fans’ loyalty.     Overall, this whole situation made one thing painfully obvious: K-pop companies have no problem squeezing every last dime from fans, and their strategy of dropping last-minute tour announcements is just another way to keep the chaos going.     In the last two to three years, there have been plenty of scenarios where big and small groups alike have announced their tours completely out of the blue. Of course, as a result, fans rush to check the dates, only to realize that the first show is less than a month away, with tickets going on sale in a matter of days. When this happens, strategic planning is no longer an option. Instead, fans make panic-induced choices, leading to extremely financially irresponsible decisions.

    The real question is why companies have become more inclined to follow this strategy. Unfortunately, the answer is pretty straightforward: urgency and panic sell more tickets. By announcing concerts at the last minute, fans are more likely to spend a huge sum of money on seats, convinced this might be their only shot at seeing their favorite idols live. Creating a “now or never” mentality is a textbook business tactic to make the most profits, and it seems like that’s all the Korean entertainment industry cares about nowadays.

    The ironic part about this strategy is that it doesn’t seem to be common in the West. In most cases, Western artists often announce tours months, sometimes even a year, in advance, giving fans plenty of time to save, plan travel, and budget for tickets. Another punch to the gut is that in Korea, fans can hop on a train to attend a concert and head home the same night. Tickets are often cheaper, and logistics are usually much simpler. But in massive regions like the U.S. or Europe, fans face expensive flights, long bus or train rides, and multiple nights in a hotel, all of which require serious planning and a good amount of money.

    Yet, K-pop companies either don’t realize or, worse, they simply don’t care that these regions work differently. The result is that most international fans are left struggling to make it work, often sacrificing other plans, maxing out credit cards, or praying their boss approves a last-minute day off. There have been many instances of these last-minute ticket drops. Take The Boyz, for example. When IST Entertainment announced their U.S. tour dates last year, fans had one business day to prepare for ticket sales in major cities like New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. 24 hours is not a lot of time to try to rearrange your budget, cancel plans, and figure out travel logistics.

    Fans of groups like NCT 127 and Ateez have faced similar situations. NCT 127 gave fans just 37 days to prepare for their Atlanta show as part of the Neo City The Link tour. Ateez was slightly better, with two months between ticket sales and their North American tour kickoff. But even then, fans were left struggling to find extra cash while juggling work, school, and other obligations.

    Overlapping Concerts in Big Cities

    Another negative result of these last-minute drops is overlapping concerts. NYC alone has seen Mamamoo and NMIXX, aespa and iKON, and Eric Nam and STAYC all performing on the same nights. Promoters may be competitors, but the lack of coordination leaves fans torn between groups they love. One PR rep even joked about the absurdity of repping two acts with concerts on the same day.

    For fans who follow multiple groups, these overlaps feel like an impossible decision, one they shouldn’t have to make in the first place.     Fans were left hanging with zero updates from OMEGA X’s team or the event organizers. Weeks of silence later, IPQ Entertainment finally broke the news: the tour was canceled due to “unavoidable circumstances.” Sure, they promised ticket refunds and even threw in some VIP goodies like a signed poster, photocards, and a video call with a member, but let’s be real: no amount of freebies can fix the heartbreak, stress, and money fans wasted.     GLAM was BigHit’s first-ever girl group, known for their debut “Party (XXO)”.

The 5-member girl group debuted in 2012 with the single “Party (XXO)”, and their career was ridden with controversies from the beginning. Dahee’s scandal from September of 2014 caused the group to be known by the general public, as GLAM never reached the stardom they might have wanted.

    For those of you that don’t know, she was accused of threatening the actor Lee Byung Hyun with blackmail. Together with the model Lee Ji Yeon, the two women sent numerous threats to Lee Byung Hyun and requested large sums of money from him.

    During the court process, Dahee and Lee Ji Yeon testified that they blackmailed the famous actor because the duo didn’t like the way Lee Byung Hun behaved towards Lee Ji Yeon after the two broke up, alleging he treated her as if she was “an object to play with.” In their eyes, what they did served as some sort of revenge, stating they didn’t do this for financial gain. However, the court was able to prove, thanks to the messages shared between Lee Byung Hun and Lee Ji Yeon, that there was no romantic relationship between them and that the women truly committed the crime for the purpose of financial gain. In the end, Dahee was sentenced to one year in prison while Lee Ji Yeon was given one year and six months in prison. While some groups are able to overcome their controversies, Dahee’s scandal led the group to their inevitable disbandment not too long after the official sentences were given out.

    B.A.P: The TS Entertainment Lawsuit

    B.A.P’s powerful performances made them a rising force until a lawsuit overshadowed their success.

    TS Entertainment is notoriously known for disbanding or mismanaging many of their groups, and B.A.P is the saddest example. Debuting with the song “Warrior” in 2012, their career started to take off in the following years, and they were very close to becoming one of the biggest artists of the decade. Unfortunately, only three years after their debut, the group got involved in a huge lawsuit scandal with their own company, and their career and success started to spiral. B.A.P asked their agency to nullify their contracts, citing unfair working conditions and profit distributions as the reason. According to B.A.P, they earned around 9 million dollars over the 3 years they were actively promoting, but each member was only paid a total of 18 thousand dollars.

    They also criticized the company for issuing contracts that only benefited them, further taking issue with their unreasonably long 7-year contract, intrusion of privacy, and causes of exploitation. TS Entertainment tried to refute the claims, stating that there was no mistreatment of the members or unfair clauses in the contract. Their attempt to salvage the situation was challenged by B.A.P once again when they released yet another statement, calling out their agency for lack of accountability, claiming they even considered filing for defamation of character. The group managed to reach a settlement with their agency, but nothing was the same as the group disbanded as soon as their contracts expired in 2019.

    2NE1: Shocking Disbandment by YG Entertainment

    2NE1’s distinctive style set them apart, yet YG Entertainment’s sudden announcement took everyone by surprise.

If there is one group who’s been done truly dirty by their agency, it’s 2NE1, as YG Entertainment announced the group’s disbandment in November of 2016 out of nowhere.

    Even though Minzy had left the agency and the group prior to their disbandment, it was a huge shock not only to their fans but to the members as well, as they had no idea their disbandment was even in the works. In fact, all of them found out about the disbandment through the media since YG wasn’t somehow able to tell them this huge news in person.

    CL shared she was at a Thanksgiving dinner when her phone started to blow up with the news. The group was even in the middle of recording for a new album when their career was suddenly cut short.

    Industry reporter Lee Jin Ho investigated the situation further and alleged that YG struggled to maintain and “control” one specific member of the group. Ultimately, the company decided to give up on 2NE1.

Overall, everything was going well for them until 2004, when major news struck their fandom. Seemingly overnight, K’Pop announced their disbandment without giving any further information about their decision. As it usually goes in fandom spaces, rumors started to spread very quickly.

    According to those rumors, K’Pop disbanded due to relationship issues between two members of the group. Allegedly, two K’Pop members were dating each other when one of them cheated on another male idol, escalating into a physical fight. To this day, no names have been revealed, but many people who believe the rumor alleged it could be Youngwon and Woohyun, as they reportedly got into a fight. The physical altercation and infidelity then reportedly caused a rift between the members, who decided that disbandment might be the best solution. However, based on what one of the group’s fans shared online, there were never any members in a relationship, and the entire rumor stemmed from a joke posted to an online forum in 2007.

Seo Ji Young allegedly couldn’t stand the amount of love Ji Hye was receiving, especially since her wealthy family was supporting the group and was part of the reason the group was formed in the first place. Her jealousy only grew stronger, and she manipulated the other members to cast Ji Hye aside, essentially driving her out of their friendship group. Ji Hye couldn’t handle Ji Young’s jealousy and taunting, and the situation escalated in the infamous elevator incident where she allegedly physically attacked Ji Young twice, having finally been fed up with the mistreatment.

    Despite Ji Hye apologizing to both Ji Young and her father, he still requested her apology be public. While many thought this would settle things, Ji Young only took it up a notch and allegedly sent her boyfriend to threaten Ji Hye on her behalf. Ji Young’s mother also allegedly swore at Ji Hye. Things escalated further when Ji Young’s family announced a press conference with the purpose of outcasting Ji Hye from the group. During the conference, Ji Young claimed that Ji Hye punched her continuously over 7 times, adding that she never actually cussed Ji Hye out. Thankfully, the group’s manager stood up for Ji Hye during the press conference and offered to call witnesses who heard Ji Young cussing at her fellow member. Because of how severe the situation was, the group never reconciled, and they disbanded shortly after the scandal.

    During an appearance on Radio Star, (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon was yet another victim of uninformed interviewers as she was confronted with an uncomfortable and inappropriate question that left fans both shocked and frustrated. At the beginning of the interview, Soyeon introduced (G)I-DLE’s impressive achievements, including their seven Rookie of the Year awards and their first music show win within just 20 days of debut. Despite this, host Kim Gura seemed completely unaware of these accomplishments as he asked her how her group was doing with achievements. 

    Kim Gura bluntly asked: “Would we know your song if we heard it?” and continued to explain that, with so many rookie groups debuting, it’s hard for him to keep track of them all, as he said the line: “We only know that ITZY is a popular trending group.” Then, without any hesitation, he directly asked Soyeon the inappropriate question: “Are you on the same level as ITZY?”

    Fans of both (G)I-DLE and ITZY were quick to criticize Kim Gura for his question, which many felt was unnecessary and disrespectful.     Soyeon, maintaining her composure, responded diplomatically, pointing out that while ITZY had already won 1st place on a music show from a public broadcasting station, (G)I-DLE was still “working towards it.”

Back in 2020, TXT joined the online KCON event where they ended up doing an interview on Good Day New York via a video call, during which, they were suddenly asked about Donald Trump’s political rally.

    The interviewer brought up the event seemingly out of the blue, making it clear that even she wasn’t sure about the question as she asked the members: “Over the weekend, the president of the United States was having a big rally. And he thought a million people would show up, but a lot of K-pop fans said they actually got the tickets and faked out the president.”

    The group was asked if they had any idea about the event that thousands of K-Pop fans had been arranging on social media, as it was a well-talked-about topic in the US at the time. However, the members didn’t seem to have any idea what the interviewer was talking about as their faces expressed shock and confusion regarding the question. Ultimately, Yeonjun seemed to find the best way of answering the question as he simply answered that they had no idea and were simply trying to prepare and practice for KCON. 

    Many fans criticized the interviewer for even asking the question in the first place, as TXT is a Korean group with Korean members, so it wouldn’t make any sense for them to stay updated on American politics, especially since they were only there for KCON.

    Shockingly, the interviewer herself actually came out to apologize after seeing all the backlash on social media, as she had claimed to have seen it trending on Twitter and had had no idea it would upset people. Maybe she will do some more research so she can avoid situations like this in the future.

    When it comes to interviewers not doing their homework, it’s something that unfortunately seems to keep happening, and it’s always called out as a huge deal by K-Pop fans. Just this past month, BTS’s Jin attended a radio show interview where the interviewer seemed to be missing a pretty huge piece of the puzzle when she started speaking about how much she loved Coldplay. The interviewer asked Jin whether or not he had seen them live, seemingly without realizing Jin’s history with the band. 


    Jin then had to clarify to her that not only had he seen them live; but he had even performed with them on stage in Argentina. His song ‘The Astronaut’ is also co-written by Coldplay, which he performed alongside Chris Martin. 

    A lot of fans were understandably disappointed to see the surprise on the interviewer’s face since it’s usually expected that some research is done before asking questions. Netizens generally criticized the interviewer for this lack of attention, especially since it seemed downright disrespectful to Jin. One user commented: “With all due respect, it is a reporter’s job to research their guest. This isn’t our first rodeo together.”

    Others even called the moment embarrassing since it suddenly became Jin’s job to educate her on a topic that she very confidently brought up and should have been aware of beforehand.

However, despite Jae’s polite answer, fans were pretty upset about the interviewer bringing up the past as they felt it was disrespectful to bring up his former group when the interview was supposed to be about his current work. As one fan put it, it seems like Jae is very eager for everyone to move on from this time in his life, which is why the question felt quite tasteless, making things more awkward.

    During a press conference for their album ‘MAP OF THE SOUL: PERSONA’, BTS also faced an awkward and controversial moment when a reporter brought up a past plagiarism allegation. The focus of the event was on their latest work, but the surprise question revisited some claims that had appeared regarding their 2016 song, ‘Blood, Sweat & Tears’, which many deemed inappropriate and irrelevant to the event.

    The situation started when the reporter awkwardly phrased a question, clumsily bringing up the ‘WINGS’ album while vaguely alluding to the accusations by asking if it drew inspiration from another source.

    Initially, attempting to give the interviewer an out, the members seemed unsure of what was actually being asked as Suga asked for clarification, saying: “Are you asking about the artworks that inspired our albums, especially ‘WINGS’ and ‘Blood, Sweat & Tears’? Did I understand that correctly?”  

    However, instead of walking back his accusations, the reporter took a more direct approach by directly mentioning the plagiarism allegations saying: “I know this question can be uncomfortable, but I wanted to hear what you had to say about the claims of plagiarism involving ‘Blood, Sweat & Tears’.”

The incident unfolded when the hosts of a variety show asked Hara what type of question she feared answering the most and Hara candidly replied that she didn’t want to discuss dating, clearly setting a boundary. However, her attempt to avoid the topic was immediately dismissed, as Super Junior’s Kyuhyun immediately joked about her being the: “dating idol.”  

    Hara, who was visibly uncomfortable at this point, pushed her water bottle across the table in protest, shocking viewers with her actions, something which is extremely rare for idols to do on television. But rather than shifting the conversation, the hosts continued pressing her about her personal life. When Hara explained that her opinion was thanks to the media’s unforgiving coverage, host Kim Gu Ra came with an even more inappropriate remark, digging into what the media was saying: “Once articles keep coming out, people will stop caring so much. But I was wondering, your relationship doesn’t seem like it was that passionate?”  

    It was clear that Hara wasn’t expecting this much probing into the topic as she then immediately attempted to defend herself by clarifying that she was just busy with Japanese promotions at the time of the rumors surrounding her relationship. Yet, the probing didn’t stop as Kyuhyun added fuel to the fire by saying that if he were to speak, Hara’s career would be over. At this point, Hara’s frustration boiled over as she was even brought to tears, saying: “What do you mean, I’ll be over?! You can’t be 100% confident, either!”

    The incident left viewers stunned and drew heavy criticism toward the hosts for their lack of sensitivity. Still, many pointed out that this kind of questioning was, unfortunately, a common experience for female idols during that period. Reporters have no excuse to behave this way, yet they continue crossing boundaries. Sadly, Hara isn’t the first, nor will she be the last, female celebrity subjected to invasive and disrespectful questions about her personal life, treated as if privacy doesn’t apply to her.

    A lot of K-Pop fans reasoned that HYBE doesn’t know how to manage their female artists properly and that they should focus on their active girl groups instead of launching two new ones. When it comes to the rumored concept of these groups, industry insiders suggest that Pledis Entertainment’s new group will focus on a youthful and refreshing concept, emphasizing the group’s vocal strengths. As for Source Music, there isn’t any information about the future group but seeing the success of LE SSERAFIM, the expectations are definitely high.

Since it’s been 5 years since aespa’s debut, the excitement is strong and the stakes are high.     According to online speculations, Hearts2Hearts is said to have a similar vibe as f(x), Red Velvet and NewJeans’ “OMG” concept.     Not only is SM Entertainment bringing out a new girl group, but they’re also trying something very different this year. Trot is a guilty pleasure of many Koreans and SM Entertainment is venturing out into this genre. Combining K-Pop’s modern sound with Korea’s traditional trot music, the group MYTRO is set to debut sometime this year. Their debut is already highly anticipated by many as entertainment agencies don’t explore genres such as trot music, which is typically liked by older generations.

    Falling for a Trot-dol: Lovestruck Noonas

    The five-member group was formed through the TV Chosun show “Falling for a Trot-dol: Lovestruck Noonas” and their pre-debut single “Bomb Bomb Bomb” has already racked up millions of views on YouTube. Since the industry is so saturated with young idols, it’s refreshing to see idols who are in their 20’s and 30’s.

    Tey

    Some of the members also seem to have past experiences in the K-Pop industry. Shohei is a former SM rookie who unfortunately suffered a serious injury that many believe completely altered his debut plans. The group’s oldest member Tey was actually an idol before he joined SM as he originally debuted in the group MR.MR in 2012. In 2013, MR.MR suffered a scandal where one of the members departed from the group after allegedly conning a woman out of her money. In the following years, the group went through a lawsuit against their company, and two new members in the line-up, and possibly due to all the changes, the group fell into a period of inactivity and quietly disbanded. This led Tey to compete in the show Mr. Trot 2, eventually securing him a position in MYTRO. Their single is already a huge hit, and we can’t wait to see what they bring out in the future!

    JYP New Group

    While it seems that 2025 will be dominated by girl groups, a new boy group from JYP Entertainment is days away from their debut. The agency’s new boy group KickFlip is about to take the K-Pop world by storm with their cool and edgy skateboarding concept. The group was formed through the SBS survival show “Loud”. Their debut is fast approaching, with the group’s big day falling on January 20th. JYP Entertainment obviously knows what they’re doing when it comes to boy groups, as they have debuted some of the most successful ones in K-Pop right now,which makes fans even more thrilled to see KickFlip in their full glory. The oldest member of the group Kye Hoon has been a trainee at JYP for about 9 years and trained alongside members from ITZY and Stray Kids. Amaru is yet another member who trained under JYP, and YG as well, before joining the show LOUD. While the other members Donghwa, Juwang, Minje, Keiju, and Donghyeon seem to not have any prior experience in training, they were one of the winners of Loud and from their pre-debut track “Umm Great”, it’s very clear that their talent and charisma is undeniable! 

    DE:VA

    The rookie girl group DE:VA’s journey to their official debut has been troublesome, to say at least. With many fans excited and eager to see the girls become official K-pop idols, it’s very disappointing to see that the girls’ journey has been full of struggles. What began as a huge controversy regarding their former agency NA Entertainment involving inappropriate behavior towards the agency’s trainees ended in the girls’ individual controversies.

    Kia of DE:VA

    Kia, who is a Senegalese-French trainee and a model, was slammed by netizens for creating inappropriate Pinterest boards where she piled up pictures of babies and labeled them as her and other K-Pop idols’ future children. Kia swiftly apologized to the netizens, stating that she was young and didn’t understand the consequences of her actions. Anna, also known as Mei, was embroiled in a controversy not too long after Kia was exposed for her scandalous past behavior. Because of the many issues surrounding the girls even before their debut, many netizens and K-pop fans are curious about how it’s all going to play out in the future. Their official debut was pushed to the second half of 2025 due to the members departing from the company, and fans are already wondering what concept and sound DE:VA is going to go for.

    Chinese-Korean New Group

    2025 will also see the debut of the Chinese-Korean boy group Polarix which was created through the survival show “Starlight Boys”, a collaboration between iQYI and SBS.

    After FIFTY FIFTY’s explosive departure from ATTRAKT, three of the members, Saena, Sio, and Aran, are making a fresh start this year under the name Ablume. According to the agency, their name was derived from the German word for flower, “blume” to represent the process of growing and blossoming. The agency further shared that through this project, the 3 members are aiming to “find their own unique colors based on their individual charms and potential”, adding that they will strive to create vibrant and diverse music. The group will operate under IOK Company’s newly established subsidiary, Massive E&C. 

    Minnie

    Minnie from (G)-IDLE is gearing up for her upcoming solo debut with the mini album “HER” and even though it’s still a few days until the release, K-Pop fans are already obsessed with one of the album tracks. The album is going to drop on January 21st, and the single “Blind Eyes Red” has been going viral on TikTok for quite some time. Many fans can’t get over the edgy sound Minnie’s gone for her debut and can’t wait to hear the album in full. The album is also going to feature a collaboration between Minnie and Yugi on a song called “Drive U Crazy” and we can already tell that this album is going to feature hit after hit.

    2. Purchase Albums: This is no news. As capitalists as it sounds, most fansigns require you to buy albums from a specific store during a set period. Each album purchase usually counts as one entry. That’s why the more albums you buy, the more chances you get. It’s still based on luck! If you don’t want to splurge, it doesn’t hurt to try with buying only an album or a set.
    3. Choose your platform: Tickets/Raffles are usually sold through Korean sites like Yes24 or Interpark for offline fansigns but for online ones, there are sites that hosts videocall events such as Apple Music, M2U, Synnara, Ktown4u, and many more.
    4. Create an account: You might need a Korean phone number or address! Exactly, “how dare they not consider international fans?” But worry no more because fans help each other out and assistance are also available around. If by chance you need a Korean number or address, proxies are now a thing! Consider using a proxy service and you can also find them mostly on the X app, instagram, threads or even facebook.
